Marie Kondo has taken the organization world by a storm. After her best-selling book and Netflix special, Marie Kondo has changed the way we view organization. According to Kondo, if you follow her method correctly, you’ll never have to organize again. Are you interested in learning more? Try out tips from the KonMari method below.

A Breakdown of the Marie Kondo Method

  1. Visualize your future: According the Kondo, visualization is one of the most important things to do when decluttering. If you can’t picture yourself using an item, or if it no longer aligns with your lifestyle, get rid of it. Following this rule will prevent you from holding onto items you don’t need.
  2. Tidy all at once: Instead of tidying a room a day split over an extended period of time, designate an entire day or however long it takes to clean. When you tidy a room a day, there’s a greater chance of each room getting messy again as time goes on.
  3. Decide whether an item “sparks joy”: When determining what to get rid of and what to keep, hold up each item and ask yourself if it sparks joy. When you look around your home and see items you don’t like, it invites negativity into your home. Instead, only keeping belongings that bring joy to you will help to create a more positive life.
  4. Tidy by category: When people tidy their houses, it’s common to tidy by location. For example, you start in the living room, then move to the bedroom and closets. But, when you follow this method, you’re likely holding onto duplicate items and more items than you need. Instead, tidy by category. For example, if you have clothes in your bedroom, closet and basement, pull out all of your clothes and put them in a pile together. Sort through your belongings and determine what you want to keep and what should go.
